Have you ever heard of the American rock vocal group, The Mamas and the Papas? They were really popular in the mid to late 1960s. My personal favorite band member was Cass Elliot. I personally think she was the real star of the group and was born in a time that just wasn’t ready for her greatness. At this point, you’re probably wondering, “What the hell does this have to do with sex toys?” Well if you must know, the song California Dreaming was the first thing I thought of when I first heard about the California Dreaming collection from CalExotics.
The California Dreaming collection draws inspiration from California girls and popular places in the Golden State. Me personally, I’m just a regular shmegular girl from New York. But the CalExotics new collection still piqued my interest because of its colorful lineup and the fact that are 7 dual stimulators (rabbit-style vibrators) to choose from. This industry’s fascination with rabbit-style vibrators will cease to amaze me. None the less, I got to try 5 of them, and now I’m ready to share my thoughts on them with you. So buckle up, guys. We’re taking a quick tour of some of the scenic views of California.
Design and Materials
For the most part, all of the items from the California Dreaming collection from CalExotics made of the same materials and have the same base features. So, we’re going to talk about those features here, and I will give you a “Design and Function” section for every item since the functions of each toy is what really differentiates them from one another.
All the toys from the California Dreaming collection are made of pure silicone, rechargeable via USB with a self-sealing port, is safe in or out of the water (Their words, not mine. I’m assuming that means its waterproof), has 10 functions of vibration, pulsation and escalation (Again, their words, not mine), a memory chip function that resumes the last vibration setting used, has a 3-button operation, and all of them come with a travel lock feature. It should also be noted that each toy comes in its own unique color.
The Travel Lock
If I haven’t said it enough on this blog, I’ll say it again. I LOVE when a vibrator comes with a travel lock. It’s becoming a trend that I’m seeing more often as new sex toys come on to the market, and I’m so here for it. Travel locks are amazing because they prevent accidental turn-ons of your motorized toys during travel and storage. Even If you’re not one to take toys with you on jet setting adventures (Sex Toy Travel Guide coming soon BTW), you can store it any way you want to without fear of the buttons accidentally touching something and turning it on. That’s happened to me so many times, and I get that weird “Heart Dropping” feeling every time it happens. It should also be noted that the button that activates with travel lock also the off button in each toy.
The Memory Function
As stated earlier, the memory chip function remembers the last vibration setting used and resumes back to that function the next time the vibe (all of them have this function) is turned on. I’ve said in the past (on this blog and elsewhere) and will continue to express my dislike for memory functions in vibrators that have over 5 vibration settings. I think in the past I might have said 10, but I’m changing that to 5. I personally don’t find this feature very beneficial to many, including myself who for the most part, don’t utilize patterns often when using a vibrator. Because I normally use the first 3 intensities on most of my vibrators for the most part. A memory function means that I will have to cycle back around to the beginning when I turn the vibe back on unless I’m trying to use the highest intensity I last left it one the last time I used it right away, which is rare. But I digress.
The Vibrations
The overall theme for the CalExotics California Dreaming collection’s vibrations is buzzy. You can feel the buzziness, but you can hear it too. While they are not loud by any means, you can hear them as you would with any device that vibrates. I would personally describe the vibrations as fast-paced, upbeat, and consistent. I find this important to note because sometimes the motors in vibrators can produce these erratic types of vibrations that are consistently inconsistent and can bounce back and forth from the base of the vibe to the where the stimulation is supposed to come from (We can talk about that later with a different vibe). Consistent vibrations mean a higher chance of better simulation. I hypothesize that all of the items from the California Dreaming collection are outfitted with the same motor. The design and function, however, can change how those vibrations are interpreted from vibe to vibe and person to person, as the sensation is subjective.
Surf City Centerfold
Design and Function
The Surf City Center Fold is a vibrator and pulsator in one. It has vibrations and a pulsating plate that moves up and down for internal stimulation and is curved for g-spot stimulation. The vibration and pulsation features can be used in combination with one another to intensify sensations or independent of one another at your pleasure discretion.
In Use
I was very skeptical about the Surf City Center Fold when I first got it. Pulse plates on sex toys aren’t a relatively new thing, but you don’t see them very often in the market. So it is what I would call new, up, and coming technology. While the idea of using a pulsating plate being used for internal stimulation raised skepticism within me, I was hopeful. I’m the type of vagina owner who can get irritated when too much of the wrong stimulation is going on. For me, sometimes when internal vibration toys are way too powerful and are combined with some type of pronounced texture like grooves, waves, or some serious ridges, it can be not only annoying but painful.
That wasn’t necessarily the case with the Surf City Centerfold, but I did find that the pulsating plate at times could be overwhelming for me. I found that I had to really crave that type of stimulation and sometimes found that thrusting with it was just too much. I do see great potential in it as I had imaged how nice it would feel to have the pulsating plate pulsating against my g-spot after a clitoral orgasm when my g-spot it the most pronounced. So instead of thrusting with it when the pulsating plate was moving, I used the vibrations internally first and then angled the pulsating plate directly on my g-spot with short, fast thrusts. In my personal opinion, it’s a great toy with unique stimulation that once you customize it to your liking, you’ll love it as I do.
Beverly Hills Bunny
Design and Function
The Beverly Hills Bunny is a dual stimulator (rabbit-style vibe) that features rotating beads in the shaft and a “Bunny teaser” that features 10 vibration setting for simultaneous clitoral and internal stimulation that can be used at the same time of independent of one another. It is also quite bulbous in the tip and slightly curved for g-spot stimulation.
In Use
Out of the two dual stimulators I got to try from this collection, the Beverly Hills Bunny was my favorite. And I am very surprised to say that. I love a good classic rabbit-style vibe, and I feel like no collection would be complete without it. I always mention how dual stimulators like these are not anatomically universal to every vagina as the distance from the vaginal opening, and the clitoris can vary drastically from person to person. I like my rabbit ears on my dual stim vibes to be long because I can reach my clit easier without having to angle it in a weird position. I also like rabbit ears because I like my clit to be sandwiched between them, so the vibrations are equally distributed on either side of my clit.
As for the internal stimulation, I found it to be enjoyable because of how nicely curved the tip is. I found the curved rounded tip great for g-spot stimulation and internal stimulation in general. While the vibrations are more on the buzzy side, they can still be significantly felt clitorally. The shaft of the Beverly Hills Bunny features rotating beads which are designed to intensify sensations further. This isn’t without flaw; however, as the silicone on the entire California Dreaming line is so firm, that it kinda limits the range of motion that the rotating beads have. Which for me, didn’t give significant stimulation internally. I would have liked to see the rotating beads be more pronounced, but if you’re someone who has steered clear of rabbit vibes because of how intense rotating beads can be on some rabbit vibes, then this one might be for an ideal option for you.
Santa Monica Starlet
Design and Function
The Santa Monica Starlet is a dual stimulator (rabbit-style vibe) that features a pulsating plate in the shaft that has 3 speeds of thumping pulsation and is curved for internal stimulation. It also features a flickering stimulator that pairs with 10 functions of vibration, pulsation, and escalation intended for clitoral stimulation.
In Use
The Santa Monica Starlet is one of those dual stimulators that I would call a true pulsating rabbit because of the pulsating plate in the insertable part. The favorite part of this one for me was the flickering stimulator as I am a lover of anything clit stimulation-related. The flicker transmitted vibrations well, and I felt like the vibrations were more intense because of the flickering motion that is caused by the vibrations. For me, a person with a clit of steel, it was too intense at times. It flickering up and down on my clit with such speed would cause me to pull it away from my clit even at the first intensity!
Thrusting with it was not 100% my fave. I found the pulsating plate to be too much when thrusting like too much was going on at the same time in combination with the flickering stimulator. If you’re someone who enjoys thrusting vigorously with their sex toys, then I suggest using a shit ton of lube prior and startling slowly. What worked for me instead was rocking the internal part back and forth while the pulsating plate did its thing and the flickering stimulator bouncing up and down on my clit in this inconsistent teasing motion. As I was I was moving the Santa Monica Starlet up and down, every time the flicker was about to come into contact with my clit, it wasn’t guaranteed that it would touch my clit, thus teasing it and increasing my desire to orgasm. And when I finally did orgasm, it was intense. The combination of those two motors, plus the feeling of fullness combined with my vagina squeezing around the internal part of the Santa Monic Starlet?!?! Heaven!
Palm Springs Pleaser
Design and Function
The Palm Springs Teasers offers a flexible body combined with 10 vibrations settings and what I would describe as a curved spoon-like shape for internal stimulation and a teaser tip for clitoral stimulation.
In Use
The first time I was messing with the Palm Springs Teaser, it bent slightly, and I got a little worried out of fear that I may have broken it. To my surprise, however, that is its intended purpose. It’s a posable vibe, meaning you can bend it and set it in any way you like without fear of it breaking. I just wouldn’t suggest twisting it, as it can potentially cause a short in the wiring that leads to the insertable part, which can affect how it transmits the vibrations.
I found that this can be used in a multitude of ways. You can use it as an internal vibe and thrust with it, you can position it to stay inside the vagina without having to hold it, you can also use it as a couples vibe during penetrative sex, use it for teasing around erogenous zones, and for clitoral stimulation of course. The ON button doubles as a booster button which while activate the third intensity even if you’re using a pattern for those times when you’re ready to really drive things home. While you can position this vibe anyway you want, it should be noted that it cannot be locked into that position and may move around as you move.
I personally enjoyed the Palm Springs Teaser clitorally and internally. I would have liked the tip to be a little bit girthier for thrusting. I did, however, enjoy positioning it to stay inside me while using another clit toy. I primarily enjoy using it for pinpoint and broad stimulation on my clit for two reasons: the vibrations and the long handle combined with the tip. This particular design is ideal for use during partnered sex, as it can fit perfectly between partners.
Hollywood Hottie
Design and Function
The Hollywood Hottie is a massager has a flickering tip designed for clitoral stimulation coupled with 10 vibration settings. I personally would describe it as a long tongue. A long sexy tongue that is.
In Use
I decided to save my personal favorite for last because when I first got the California Dreaming items to review, this one was the one I anticipated liking the least. Before I even took it out of the box, I remember looking at it and saying to myself, “This is going to do nothing for me.” I wasn’t impressed by design, it looked like a tongue, and I thought the vibrations wouldn’t transmit well to the tip to give me enough stimulation. The underside of the Hollywood Hottie has ridges which can be used for added texture and stimulation on the clit either alone or combined with the vibrations. If you someone who likes rubbing the textured side of a vibe or dildo on your genitals before using the vibrations, this one might do you right. I personally enjoyed rubbing the ridges against my clit from time to time and have to say that it’s quite a nice touch.
When you turn the Hollywood Hottie on, you can immediately feel the vibrations all throughout. When you’re holding it, you can feel the vibrations in your hand and all through the tip, but it’s consistent. That can be a good or a bad thing because that means that the vibrations are just as strong in the tip as they are in the handle. If you’re someone who doesn’t like to feel their vibes vibrating in their hands when holding them, you’ve been fair-warned. It’s not a deal breaker for me. I have to say, however, that I really love this one because the vibrations are strong and reach deep. Sometimes I don’t even make it to the third intensity before cumming. The on button also doubles as a boost button which skips to the third intensity when pressed, even if you’re on a pattern. You don’t even have to ask me if I like that. I love it!
I also find that I can use it three different ways: Either by laying it flat on my clit for indirect/broad stimulation, or using it sideways or placing the tip of it on my clit for direct stimulation. Some other things I enjoyed was using it with a partner. You could also do a little teasing around the anus, balls, frenulum, and use it while performing oral sex on your partner. It’s really a versatile item, and I don’t see why it can’t be used internally. Just not anally.
Final Thoughts
While I didn’t get to try all of the toys from the California Dreaming collection from CalExotics, I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed what I did get to try. The travel-lock feature is the icing on the cake for this collection. I feel like a bullet, and a wand would have brought the collection to a full 360. If you’re someone looking for a rabbit-style vibe, they definitely have you covered, and if you’re looking for something with just vibrations, they have something for you too.
